The yuzu is an ancient hybrid, likely a cross between a sour mandarin and a cold-hardy citrus species called Ichang papeda, which originated in central China. The fruit was introduced to both Japan and Korea during the Tang Dynasty, over 1,300 years ago, and has been cultivated in both countries ever since. In Korea, the fruit is more commonly called yuja (유자). Jeju Island's volcanic soil and climate contribute to the fruit's distinctive qualities. A scientific study even indicates that yuzu from Jeju can contain higher levels of beneficial flavonoids than those grown in other Korean regions.
If you are looking to spice things up, we recommend adding a tablespoon to Sejak, Balhyo, or you can even add it to your bath!
