Yoji Yamada builds his pottery in the English slipware tradition, but rather than throwing on a wheel, he presses each piece into a mold while the clay is still wet and pliable. His signature technique is to apply the liquid clay slip at the same wet, moldable stage — trailing and combing it across the surface before the piece takes its final shape — so the pattern stretches and shifts naturally as the clay is pressed into form. The pieces are then wood-fired as yakishime, unglazed stoneware fired hot enough to vitrify the clay body itself, so the slip pattern is set by flame and ash rather than a poured or brushed glaze. The result reads as slipware at a glance but handles like everyday tableware — plates, cups, and vessels sturdy enough for daily use, with a surface that only grows more distinct with handling and washing over time.
