Yusuke and Yuya Torimoto hand-blow this vessel from a glass batch they formulate themselves from more than ten raw materials—silica sand, lime, and soda ash among them—balanced by hand and stripped of iron impurities for clarity. It's gathered molten from a crucible held above 1,300°C, shaped on the blowpipe, reheated to its final form, then cooled for hours in an annealing oven so it won't crack under its own tension. Unlike most glass teaware, which is pressed from a mold, this piece is shaped entirely freehand and can never be exactly reproduced — the Torimotos work by feel, adjusting to that day's furnace heat, and produce only a limited number of pieces each year.
