The Xi Gui tea-growing region in Yunnan Province is distinguished by its unique terroir—a combination of geographical and environmental factors that impart a distinctive character to its teas. The local saying, "Head atop Manglu Mountain, feet in the Lancang River," aptly describes Xigui's landscape—tea gardens are cultivated on Manglu Mountain's slopes, directly facing the Lancang River. The river's mist influence: The Lancang River releases substantial vapor that rises to form persistent clouds and mist around the gardens, providing natural shading that slows the growth of tea leaves. Higher humidity favors tea cultivation by promoting the development of aroma compounds in the leaves. Sharp temperature variations between day and night help concentrate flavors and aromas. Xi Gui is regarded as the finest among the three Bangdong regions and is often compared to the powerful Lao Ban Zhang of Menghai. Teas from Xi Gui possess such energy that they are definitely worth aging!
