This teapot is shaped by Gyokusendo’s artisans from a single sheet of copper, raised over iron anvils called toriguchi and struck by hand until the flat metal draws into a rounded form. Because copper hardens as it is hammered, the piece is repeatedly heated and cooled to restore its malleability, then struck again, with each blow placed so the marks sit evenly across the surface. The hammer marks left in the finished body are the record of that work, which is why no two pots are exactly alike. Each teapot is then colored individually by oxidizing the surface, and some finishes use tin plated and baked onto the copper to reach shades the bare metal cannot. A coat of natural Japanese tree wax is melted over the patina, which fades gradually with use and leaves the surface deeper in luster over time. It features a built-in strainer.
