Sakura Nanbugata, literally translated as "Cherry Blossom Motif Southern Style," represents the most emblematic and traditional form of the Iwate Tetsubin. During the mid-17th century, the feudal lord of the Nanbu clan commissioned master metal artisans from Kyoto to develop chagama for tea ceremonies integral to samurai culture in Morioka. The designation "Southern Style" is relative, considering Kyoto lies south of Morioka, which is situated at the northern extremity before reaching Hokkaido.
Each piece is crafted by hand from a single sand-cast mold, where the intricate design and texture are pressed into place. The kettle-making process revolves entirely around the mold, utilizing tools and stamps passed down through generations, ensuring a touch of traditional artistry in every modern piece. The mold is then expertly formed and designed, molten iron poured in, left to cool and solidify for several days, and finally freed from its sand womb. Due to the high demand for Morihisa tetsubin, there is a waitlist of 1-2 years, making our selection the most extensive available for immediate purchase.
*When placing the kettle on the stove, use the smallest burner and keep the flame on medium/low to avoid flames climbing up the sides and leaving marks on the kettle.
