麻黑古树 Harvested and processed in 2022, Pressed August 10, 2023
The unique character of Mahei tea is deeply influenced by its specific terroir—the natural environment where it is cultivated. In Pu'er, the concept of "cultivar" is often secondary to the "tea mountain" and village of origin. Several factors contribute to Mahei's special terroir, including the age of the trees, the forest environment, and altitude and climate.
Mahei is renowned for its ancient Gushu arbor tea trees (古树), some of which are said to be around 150 to 700 years old. These deep-rooted trees absorb a rich and complex mix of minerals and nutrients from the soil. The tea trees grow in a pristine, forested environment surrounded by camphor, toon, and lacquer trees. This diverse ecosystem is believed to enhance the tea's layered aroma and flavor profile. The tea gardens are located at altitudes of about 1,200 to 1,331 meters, with a mild climate and ample rainfall, creating ideal growing conditions.
Mahei holds a significant place in the history of Pu'erh tea. During the early 2000s, when the popularity of Lao Banzhang skyrocketed, Ma Hei tea was often used as a key component in blends meant to replicate the coveted Lao Banzhang profile. This is because Mahei tea offers a similar strength and structure but is more approachable and delicate. Its consistent quality and reliable aging potential have made it a respected and sought-after tea in its own right.
