Xu Fang Mei began his apprenticeship with the renowned National Arts artist, Jie Ping Lu, in 1996. His minimal style injects emotions through the subtle changes in textures and patterns that have become his signature style.
The tension of Dahongpao clay is relatively low, while the shrinkage ratio is very high up to 30%. When firing, it is easy to wrinkle, crack, collapse, deform and the kiln temperature control is extremely precise which normally results in a 30% loss. The ringing sound of the clay is a great achievement. After firing, the texture of the clay is dense, firm, yet delicate while the color changes greatly after bathing with hot water, showing a reddish-purple color. There is both an artistic and functional standard for evaluating Yixing teapots, and it should refine tea making by appearance alone. As we are tea-lovers, our proclivity is for shapes and styles that aid in making tea well. There should be a balance between beauty and function after quality. These classic, simple shapes are a perfect canvas to create a deep luster and patina over time.
