Qian Yun Zhu is an awarded National Arts and Crafts artist. She focuses on tradition, classic shapes, practicality and only makes pure handmade teapots. The clay is made of different kinds of purple sand clay that was specially made by her father. She has won awards in many competitions and exhibitions and is also favored by collectors and connoisseurs.
First Grade raw ore Dahongpao clay is an extremely fine grain with a shrinkage ratio of up to 30%, making it difficult to masterfully shape during production. The color is bright red with a mysterious wet luster. When firing, it is easy to wrinkle, crack, collapse, deform and the kiln temperature control is extremely precise which normally results in a 30% loss. The ringing sound of the clay is a great achievement. After firing, the texture of the clay is dense, firm, yet delicate while the color changes greatly after bathing with hot water, showing a reddish-purple color. There is both an artistic and functional standard for evaluating Yixing teapots, and it should refine tea making by appearance alone. As we are tea-lovers, our proclivity is for shapes and styles that aid in making tea well. There should be a balance between beauty and function after quality. These classic, simple shapes are a perfect canvas to create a deep luster and patina over time.
