Sung Wook Park specializes in Moon Jars and has been creating them for over twenty years. He is an artist that uses ceramics as a medium for his fine art and tea wares with a unique expression that resonates throughout his entire work. His inspiration comes from classic Korean ceramics while focusing on Buncheong and pure iron black glaze.
Buncheong style ceramics use dark clay with a white slip and it predates Japanese ceramics by several hundred years. It is an art form that is defined by the depth of expression in two simple colors; black and white. Just like in calligraphy, where the amount of pressure put on each brushstroke creates a dark blot like a vortex or a thin, translucent gray that is almost a shadow of color. Buncheong has the ability to express strength and lightness without any use of decoration, all you are left with is the pure shape of the ceramic and the seemingly infinite layers of glaze.
Sung Wook Park has exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and we are extremely excited to present the works of this extremely talented and kind artist.
When we first opened 29B Teahouse, we traveled to Korea for our buying trip and were welcomed into his studio four years ago. He eagerly agreed to meet with us despite the fact that we didn't have a budget for his fine teawares. He has always believed in our vision to introduce contemporary ceramics through tea and finally, we have the opportunity to present this extraordinary artist.
"I work with small pieces of ceramics to produce a complete work. This process entails the reinterpretation of fragments of ancient ceramics. Through the process of putting the pieces together, I become aware of the layers of time."
