Kansai Regional Tea Competition Sep 3, 2021
A complete boxed set of Competition Japanese teas for the most discerning of palates! Included are our most recent auction-winning teas that represent the highest technical standard in hand-made tea production. Every year about two hundred farmers compete in five categories (Sencha, Fukamushi, Kabuse, Gyokuro, and Tencha) of the Kansai Tea Competition and it includes the prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyōgo, Shiga, and Mie. This year we were very excited to win the bidding auction and secure the entire lot of this tea which is a little under 4kg and share such a special selection exclusively with you.
1. Kansai Competition Winner No.1 Uji Gyokuro
Shinki Yamashita is the 3rd generation award-winning producer from a heralded tea family. We were able to win the bid for an entire lot of this competition. It is both an accomplishment and honor for us to be able to bring such a tea to America and showcase the extraordinary talents of this producer. We will release this tea in small amounts as we are looking to age it for several years! Uji is one of the few places that age their gyokuro for six months up to two years to deepen the flavors.
Kyoto, Japan (Kyotonabe)
Clear hon dashi at the early stages, followed by an almost haunting floral aftertaste
2 x 5g
2. Competition Yabukita Sencha No. 1002
I was amazed to find one farmer from Yamazoe, Nara placing 2nd and 3rd in both the Sencha and Kabuse categories, respectively. An incredible feat and his ambitiousness resulted in two beautiful teas made from different cultivars and distinct processing techniques. They are impressive and the deep sweetness and taste linger long after the last sip.

3. Competition Saemidori Kabusecha No. 3003
Kabuse is a shaded style of green tea with a refreshing balance of umami and shibumi (astringency). It is shaded about half the time (1-2 weeks) compared to Gyokuro or Tencha for matcha.
