Sung Wook Park is an artist who uses ceramics as a medium for his fine art and tea wares. His unique expression resonates throughout his work. His inspiration comes from classic Korean ceramics, focusing on the Buncheong style with its pure iron black glaze.
Heug-yu, an iron black glaze, has historically been produced in the same kilns that make Buncheong and embodies the artistic dark side of Sung Wook Park's many moon paintings and Buncheong moon jars. The iron black glaze on the teaware appears as thick as oil or tar, and occasionally, there is slight oxidation that looks like an antique rust finish. Many layers of texture emphasize the classic shapes, which are balanced by the modern geometric shapes of the handles. The handles have also been covered in lacquer and will slowly wear away, exposing the raw copper underneath.
"I work with small pieces of ceramics to produce a complete work. This process entails the reinterpretation of fragments of ancient ceramics. Through the process of putting the pieces together, I become aware of the layers of time."
